So you are not going to be sending me a check or anything for contributing value to this page with a reply, right... can't expect a very valuable reply then I suppose.

Anderson's hypothesis seems to be that one make money charging by the letter OR by giving a way a book...and charging for the upgrade

That's an alternative... do one OR do the other... an option.

I can understand why not exploring an option might have value... Crest is a fine toothpaste This Colgate nonsense is just an unproven upstart...

Sounds like more of a brand issue than anything else... Loyalty to Capitalism Classic is best, 2.0 is a gimmick don't bother.

I don't subscribe to the New Yorker, so thank you Seth for putting me onto the FREE Malcolm Gladwell article. At the top is a citation from Anderson:
“In the digital realm you can try to keep Free at bay,” Chris Anderson writes, “but eventually the force of economic gravity will win.” Gravity seems to be in effect...

Elsewhere, Anderson mentions Stewart Brand who opined
"On the one hand information wants to be expensive, because it's so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time. So you have these two fighting against each other." Whole Earth Review (May 1985, p. 49)

I don't see 'for pay' going away just because 'for free' exists.

Hi Seth--I've really enjoyed reading your recent opinions on the issue of "free", of photography and copyright and Flickr. Keep it up! I made some commentary at http://dwarmstr.blogspot.com/2009/06/intersection-of-onlinesharing-culture.html .
