Preparation for A Trip To Oregon Via Empire Builder

Too Many People, Too Many To Recall

At the end of June, I’m going to visit my grandmother (born in 1929), who recently moved from Guam to a memory care facility in Oregon. I have never done this before, but I’m going to take Amtrak’s Empire Builder line both there and back.

In anticipation of a long train journey, I’m sort of kicking the tires of a bunch of things, including posting to this blog. I may end up making a travelogue (or not), at least I’d like to be sure that the tools are still working as intended.

I’m bringing a laptop, so have updated my Scrivener app, in case I want to work on my novel, or my screenplay, or poetry, or something heretofore unplanned. Maybe I’ll write a song?

You Turn To Speak But You Are Alone

I plan to bring my Nikon camera, a few eBooks, mostly from Standard eBooks, maybe a Handbrake-ripped film or 7 on a flash drive. I spent the extra money to purchase a sleeper room, but from what I’ve heard and read, there isn’t much space in it, nor a window. I anticipate I’ll bring a rolling suitcase, a backpack, perhaps a bag of food and snacks, even perhaps a bottle of wine, and nothing else. 2 pairs of shoes?

What should I bring that I’m not thinking of? Besides clothes, and things I would normally bring on a trip…

  • Passport (just in case)
  • binoculars
  • a blanket
  • Eye mask
  • charging cables for phone/laptop/camera
  • daypack?
