My photo of the former Palace Grill Sandwich Shop made it into Flickr Explore.

Palace Grill Sandwich Shop Since 1938

A melancholy sort of image of a nice neon sign since the owner of the Palace Grill claimed because of a fight with his insurance company after a fire, he had to close down.

I was walking down Madison Street on a nice spring day, with only my iPhone camera instead of my Nikon. I took snaps of both sides, but liked this one with the blue-ish clouds behind the sign more. I used Google Snapseed to increase the contrast, but otherwise, this is straight out of the iPhone camera.

WEST LOOP — Palace Grill is officially on the market.

Two years after a fire swept through the 80-year-old West Side diner at 1408 W. Madison St., its owner has put it up for sale for an undisclosed amount, confirmed broker Scott Maesal, managing director of SVN Chicago Commercial.

Maesal told Block Club that Palace Grill owner owner George Lemperis was ready to sell the 19,000-square-foot building.

Speculation swirled about the possibility of Lemperis reopening Palace Grill in the months following the February 2024 blaze. The restaurant later said that a lightning strike caused the fire. While Lemperis attempted to negotiate with his insurance company, a crowdsourcing campaign created to help the restaurant rebound netted nearly $49,000.
