Let Me Show You How to Eagle Rock was uploaded to Flickr

Eagle Rock, you remember how to Eagle Rock, right?

[for instance: Dictionary of American Regional English; ]

[also:
Eagle rock
1 – a popular black dance from the 1920’s, performed with the arms outstretched with wings and the body rocking from side to side. Here’s a description of the Eagle Rock (Ballin’ The Jack ?)dance:

"First you put your two knees close up tight, then you sway ’em to the left
Then you sway ’em to the right, step around the floor kind of nice and light
Then you twist around and twist around with all your might,
Stretch your lovin’ arms straight out into space,
then you do the Eagle Rock with style and grace.
Swing your foot way ’round then bring it back.
Now that’s what I call Ballin’ the Jack."

[some say Eagle Rock is a metaphor for sexual congress, but I have no special insight into that usage in re: this photo]

I only knew the phrase from a Blind Willie McTell song, Kind Mama:

Soon in the morning at half past four
Hot shot rider rappin’ at her door
She’s a real kind mama looking for another man
She ain’t got nobody in town to hold her hand
Went to the door and the door was locked
Think that baby tryin’ to eagle rock
She’s a real kind mama looking for another man
Real kind mama looking for another man
And she ain’t got nobody here to hold her hand

Kind mama looking for another man

Asparagus for New Year’s Eve was uploaded to Flickr

Happy New Year, everyone.

And the reference, in case you’ve never heard this before:
www.rodale.com/how-prevent-hangover

• Eat asparagus. While researchers used asparagus extract in the study, its hangover-fighters are present in the whole veggie, and remain stable even after being cooked at higher temperatures, such as steaming and boiling. So if you’re planning on drinking, include asparagus in your lunch and/or dinner to help prevent a hangover, or eat it the day after if you’re looking for good hangover food.

Even if it doesn’t work, at least you’ve eaten some delicious asparagus. Win-win!

I made the Ted Haigh version, from Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails

2 parts dry gin, one part lemon juice, and two dashes of maraschino liqueur. I actually used a Meyer Lemon, but I only had one, so it is not pictured.

I liked how my folks and my LA hosts turned bokeh in the background while the plant leaves crossed their proverbial legs in the foreground. I tried a few variants (black and white; stark, high contrast black and white; and over-saturated color) before settling on this toned version. I’ll probably revisit later, and try other versions too.

Gape at the Thoughts Which Others Have Thought

Somewhere in the Financial District of Los Angeles.
Architect unknown.
John C. Portman, Jr

In his book Postmodern Geographies: the reassertion of space in critical social theory (1989), Edward W. Soja describes the hotel as “a concentrated representation of the restructured spatiality of the late capitalist city: fragmented and fragmenting, homogeneous and homogenizing, divertingly packaged yet curiously incomprehensible, seemingly open in presenting itself to view but constantly pressing to enclose, to compartmentalize, to circumscribe, to incarcerate. Everything imaginable appears to be available in this micro-urb but real places are difficult to find, its spaces confuse an effective cognitive mapping, its pastiche of superficial reflections bewilder co-ordination and encourage submission instead. Entry by land is forbidding to those who carelessly walk but entrance is nevertheless encouraged at many different levels. Once inside, however, it becomes daunting to get out again without bureaucratic assistance. In so many ways, its architecture recapitulates and reflects the sprawling manufactured spaces of Los Angeles” (p. 243-44).

Not to mention:

It has been featured in many movies and television series over the years including: Strange Days, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Blue Thunder, Breathless, This is Spinal Tap, Hit the Booty Do, In the Line of Fire, Nick of Time, True Lies, Midnight Madness, Showtime, Hard to Kill, The Lincoln Lawyer, Chuck, Moby Dick, The Fantastic Journey and was destroyed (via special effects) in Escape from LA and Epicenter. The television series It’s a Living was set in a restaurant atop the Bonaventure. The Westin Bonaventure Hotel is also showcased in episodes of CSI and its exterior can be seen in Americathon, Mission: Impossible III, Almighty Thor, Hancock, and at the beginning of the Lionel Richie Dancing on the Ceiling music video. You can see it being constructed in the movie The Wilderness Family.
